I think this is a great text book for General Genetics class! In fact, this is the text we have been using at UC Berkeley.
The authors are not only clear & concise in delivering their topics, but also able to formulate challenging questions to test students' undestanding.

I very much liked this book. It has some of the best illustrations and photomicrographs that I have ever seen in a science textbook. The organization of the book is pretty good too. I enjoyed the background material on methods and thought the length of the book was just right. More is not always better. The only minor gripe I had was that the photomicrographs are not labeled by type (i.e., SEM, TEM, Confocal, etc.). There is a huge amount of research in the genetics area that others might have stuffed into this book, but the authors wisely chose to limit their scope somewhat.

This book has proven to be a fantastic way to introduce genetics to students who have no knowledge whatsoever of genetics to some with basic knowledge as well as those with extensive knowledge! The chapters continually get harder (like any other text book) and the example problems are amazing! Very thorough and easily thought-out, not a quick answer! They definitely take time to think through and discuss options with other classmates! I'm extremely glad that my professor chose this text book! I'm thoroughly enjoying it!

This book is excellent considering basics in the field of Genetics. It is very informative and provides a solid base for starters in this science. Recommended for premeds.

This book is usually supplied by the publisher as part of a bundled package. When ordered with the ISBN 0072848464 this is the book that is supplied. When ordered with ISBN 0073227382 this book as well as a book on Microbiology which appears to be a cut down version of the publishers primary microbiology text.
As is common with a lot of text books, this book has a series of authors. Leland Hartwell is the 2001 winner of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. The other authors, four more Ph.D.'s, are nearly equally distinguished. What makes this book such a success is that they then then work with Ruth Veres who is a professional writer to take their scientific writing and turn it into something the average person can read. Further it was her task to take the input from the author team and present it in one style, one voice.
This is the third edition of the book, with updates to reflect the new discoveries, revisions and rewording to reflect suggestions and comments from past readers, and a new artistic design that is both more user friendly and easier to distinguish the most important comments.
